The tires (“Solar 4XS”) on the RX7, while round and made of some sort of rubber, are awful. Outside of r-comps, nobody seems to make decent 13" rubber. The sidewall is floppier than half-set Jello and the grip is on par with wood.
I had been planning on picking up a set of Federal SS595 in 205/60R13 this spring, but infuriatingly at some point between a couple months ago and now they seem to have fallen off the face of the planet, and nobody has them. They have the 185/60R13, but that is too small (as in overall height, factory is 185/70R13). Vredenstein makes something, but it’s pricey for the size and would look way out of place on a car from 1985 (they look like they belong in 1965).
Am I screwed? This car is my summer daily so I’m not putting R888s on it or any of the other track tires that exist in 205/60R13. I cannot describe how much I like the factory “+” wheels, plus I don’t really want to drop a grand on 15" wheels and tires, though there are options there that look good, too.

Any ideas? I’m to the point that I’m missing autocrosses I had intended to make it to due to the laughably bad tires on the car, and generally getting frustrated with their mushiness.

It is the exact reason I am going to 15’s on my Civic. There are no good tiresfor 13s now. Up until a few years ago you could get decent Kumhos, but that was about it.
I just hope my car doesn’t look like it has wagon wheels afterwards.

From the second paragraph:
“Vredenstein makes something, but it’s pricey for the size and would look way out of place on a car from 1985 (they look like they belong in 1965).”

I know what you mean. A while ago Yokohama announced they were re-releasing the Advan but I’ve yet to see them in the US and don’t really expect to going forward, either.

I have BFG T/As on the Chevelle. A sporty tire they are not. Very good looking, though.

Oops, missed that, sorry.

The 15's will happen sooner or later.

Look for 15's with tires on Craigslist? It sucks but that’s where the tire options really start to open up.

Yes, I’m sure craigslist is full of 15x7 wheels with a +20 offset drilled in 4x110mm

Not if I can help it. I’ll probably end up not doing it for so long that the wheels will be NLA just like all the tires I want.

Well it’s clear there are no viable options, just expensive track tires and meh all seasons.

Rats. I didn’t realize those had a somewhat uncommon bolt pattern
Probably no better from your perspective, but I do know a few miata guys who still seem able to find good rubber in 14"

If the larger wheels from a GSL would fit that would be my go to, maybe a 14” wheel but you could get a 60 series tire and keep the same outside diameter and have a cool OEM wheel.

If I buy something it’ll be 15" - figure $800 for wheels and good tires, which isn’t bad at all but it doesn’t change the fact that I don’t
want
different wheels.

GSL had the same wheel options; the GSL-SE had 14" wheels but with a different (more common) bolt pattern; in any case they’re still a different wheel, which I don’t want. I like my +s
